Woman led to safety from A50

A woman has been led to safety from a footbridge in Longton.

Emergency services were called to reports of a woman in distress by the A50 exit for the town at around 6.50pm last night.

Working at heights officers from Staffordshire Police and specially-trained firefighters on an aerial ladder platform managed to help the woman to safety within an hour.

She was then taken to the Royal Stoke University Hospital by colleagues from West Midlands Ambulance Service.

The A50 was shut in both directions for a period of time but has since reopened.

Chief Inspector Steve Taylor, force incident manager for Staffordshire Police, said: "I would like to thank the public for their patience and support during this incident. The woman is now safe thanks to the excellent partnership work from all three emergency services."
