Road could be closed for five weeks while unsafe building demolished

Part of a busy commuter road in Stoke-on-Trent could be closed for more than a month, while a building is demolished.

The City Council says it was called out to Newcastle Street in Middleport by the fire service yesterday (22 April) due to concerns over an unsafe structure.

After an inspection, they decided that the property, which is in private ownership, would need to be brought down.

Work is due to start this Thursday (25 April) and will require some large machinery to be brought in, including a crane which will have to be positioned on Newcastle Street due to its size and weight.

This means the current road closure will have to remain in place while the work is carried out - which could take up to five weeks.

Traffic will continue to be diverted on Westport Road.
