Man who fled UK after being charged with Stoke-on-Trent rape now jailed

A 27-year-old man who fled the UK after he raped a woman in Stoke-on-Trent has been jailed.

The city's crown court heard offence took place in October 2015.

Vladimir Girga was charged with rape but failed to attend magistrates court in March 2017.

A European Arrest Warrant was issued, and Girga was extradited from Slovakia and returned to UK custody in December 2018.

He pleaded guilty to rape, and was sentenced to six years and eight months behind bars on Wednesday (30 January).

He was also placed on the sex offenders’ register for life.

Detective Constable Matthew Jones, of Staffordshire Police, said: “Thanks to the courage and determination of the victim in coming forward Vladimir Girga is now behind bars.

“We will always do whatever it takes to bring offenders to justice, while ensuring victims and witnesses are offered the support they need.”
