Stoke beaten on opening day

Stoke City suffered a 2-1 defeat to Queens Park Rangers in their first game of the new season.

Manager Nathan Jones handed debuts to three of his summer signings, Nick Powell, Jordan Cousins and Tommy Smith while Lee Gregory was named among the substitutes.

Youngster Nathan Collins got the nod in defence in place of the injured Ryan Shawcross and another new boy Liam Lindsay who was suspended.

Rangers caught Stoke cold early on when an error from Jack Butland led to Bright Osayi- Samuel crossing from the right and ex-Port Vale striker Jordan Hugill, who joined from West Ham on loan, scored from close range.

The Potters were again caught napping at the start of the second half when Eberechi Eze raced through from the half way line before finding the bottom corner.

Stoke pulled one back through Sam Clucas twelve minutes from time but it was all to no avail as the visitors who included ex-Potter Geoff Cameroon held out to clinch victory.
