Crewe cause cup upset, Stoke are through but Vale go out

Crewe Alexandra caused a big upset by knocking Championship side Middlesborough out of the Carabao Cup.

The Alex went through 4-2 on penalties after the game ended 2-2 after 90 minutes.

Crewe were two-up at the break thanks to goals from Chris Porter and Charlie Kirk.

Ashley Fletcher reduced the arrears on 75 minutes.

Marc Bola then equalised for the home side in the 90th minute.

Chris Porter, Paul Green, Harry Pickering and James Jones were all on target with their spot kicks while Boro missed twice.

Crewe have been rewarded for their victory with a home tie against Aston Villa.

Stoke City are also through to the second round after a 1-0 win at Wigan.

Manager Nathan Jones made eight changes for the game.

Among them, Mark Duffy and Cameron Carter-Vickers made their debuts while 18-year-old Nathan Collins was handed the captain's armband.

The only goal of the game came after 11 minutes through Sam Vokes.

Stoke have been drawn away to Leeds United.

But Port Vale are out.

They were beaten 2-1 at home by Burton Albion.

Manager John Askey made two changes with Mark Cullen and Cristian Montano coming in for Tom Pope who dropped to the bench and Manny Oyeleke who was injured.

Liam Boyce put the visitors in front after 9 minutes.

Mark Cullen equalised with a penalty on 53 minutes, but Scott Fraser struck the winner just after the hour mark.
