Crusty Cob

A favourite smells is the smell of bread baking!  Here’s a simple yet really effective recipe that you can make to impress your mates.

Ingredients

500g strong plain white bread flour

10g Dried Yeast

10g salt

30g butter (cubed and softened)

320 lukewarm water

Method

If you have a mixer with a dough hook then this recipe is even easier.  Mix together your dried ingredients (flour, yeast and salt) and then rub in the butter (it will look a little like bread crumbs).

Then with your mixer on low start to add the water.

Leave this to mix and knead for approx. 10 mins then cover with cling film or a cloth and leave to prove for around 1 – 2 hours.

After the first prove lightly knead your dough again and shape into a ‘cob’ shape.  Place this on your baking tray.

Make a few cuts in the top and sprinkle with some flour.

Cover again (you can put it in a plastic bag)  to prove again for around 1 hour. 

Pop in the oven for around 25/30 minutes on Gas Mark 7.

Tip – put a baking tray with some water in it on the bottom shelf as the steam helps the loaf get a crispy crust.
